Habitat: on bark or stone.
BotanyMoss; forming extensive, branched and often very shiny turf; reproducing often vegetatively by forming flagella.
Leaves: the position of the leaflets is characteristic, attached spirally, but twisted such that the leaf surfaces all lie in one plane, appearing as two rows of flat leaves; individual leaflets are often asymmetrical; vein may or may not be present, rarely a double rib; rib stops well before the leaf tip; cells of the leaf surface are oval, or sometimes short to elongated, and always smooth, not papillose; wing cells are not particularly differentiated.
Capsule: erect; oval to elongated oval; peristome consists of two rows of teeth and a total of 16 teeth; the inner row of peristomes is often shorter than the outer, sometimes completely reduced; calyptra is cap-shaped asymmetrical.
