Region: Central and South America, Caribbean, Asia.
Habitat: prefers moist, shaded forest floors, often in tropical or subtropical regions.
Use: ornamental, ground cover, in aquariums.

Root: creeping rhizome from which the fronds arise.
Leaves: singular, monomorphic; quite large; lanceolate to oblong; pinnately compound; distinctive lace-like appearance due to the network of veins; leaf margins finely serrated or lobed; veins form a reticulate, net-like.

Sori: linear; along the veins of the fronds.
Taxonomy
In the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group classification of 2016. Alternatively it can be placed in a much more broadly defined family Aspleniaceae as the subfamily Asplenioideae.
