Actiniopteris radiata
Region: tropical Africa, Mali to Somalia, south to South Africa; east Asia, India, Sri Lanka.
Habitat: dry tropics; prefers bright, filtered sunlight, sunny or lightly shaded; in rock crevices, at boulder bases, base of a rock, in shallow soil pockets overlaying sheet rock, among low scrub; seasonally moist conditions, lower humidity than most ferns; elevations of 230 to 1000 metres.
Content: carcinogens; thiaminase.
Use: medicinal; ornamental.
BotanyFern; small, 10 to 15cm tall; epilithic or epiphytic.
Root: short, creeping rhizome.
Leaves: fan-shaped; shrivel during drought, appearing dead; rehydrate with rains.
