Region: south America, Bolivia, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia; Central America, Panama, Costa Rica.
Habitat: rainforests.
Use: wood for timber, heavy construction, bridges, fence posts, decks, industrial floors; wood for fuel, can burn when green.
BotanyTree; rounded crown; large, 5 to 20 to 30 metres tall; saplings grow seldom close to an adult specimen.
Stem: straight, cylindrical; 10 to 60 cm in diameter; small buttresses; branches only near the top.
Leaves: dense foliage.
Dispersion: saplings grow not close to an adult specimen, apparently there is a fungus associated with adults which tends to kill nearby saplings.
