Region: Central America; Costa Rica to Mexico.
Botany: sparsely branched evergreen shrub or small tree; ± 3 m tall; habitat moist or wet to rather dry forest, wet forest, river banks, disturbed ground, brushy hillsides, elevations
Taxonomy: close to Piper methysticum.
Use: flavouring soups; condiment; sassafras-like flavour.
Content: kava lactones.
