English: Long beech fern; Northern beech fern; Narrow beech fern.
Synonym: Dryopteris phegopteris; Thelypteris phegopteris.
Region: Northern Hemisphere.
Habitat: terrestrial wetlands; cliffs, balds, or ledges, forests, shores of rivers or lakes, talus and rocky slopes.
Content: phenolic compounds 2,4,6-trihydroxybenzoic acid-4-O-2′,3′,4′,6′-tetraacetylglucoside; 2,4,6-trihydroxybenzoic acid-4-O-2′,3′,6′-triacetylglucoside; 2,4,6-trihydroxybenzoic acid-4-O-3′,4′,6′-triacetylglucoside; 3-O-p-coumaroylshikimic acid; 2-(trans-1,4-dihydroxy-2-cyclohexenyl)-5-hydroxy-7-methoxychromone; kaempferol; and kaempferol-3-O-β-d-glucoside.
BotanyFern; epipetric and terrestrial; 10 to 50 cm tall.
Root: rhizome growing at or below the ground.
Leaves: twice compound; rachis with wing connecting all leaflets except the two lowest leaflets, which are angled downward; upper pinnae are more fused to create a long-tapering frond tip; leaf stalk with scales and hairs; veins go to the edge of the leaf blade; 4 to 30 cm long.
Chromosome count: of n = 90, triploid.
