Botany: swamps, wet areas; tropical South America; flowers yellowish; fruit chestnut colour, with shiny scales, yellow flesh covers a hard, oval, nut; seeds float, propagates.
Use: fruit is edible, high vitamin C; juice, jam, ice cream, fermented wine; oil high in vitamin A; inflorescence buds are eaten as a vegetable; fibre; Buriti oil is an orange-reddish, containing oleic acid, tocopherols and carotenoids, especially betacarotene.
