Botany: succulent herbs; echlorophyllous, root parasite; leaves reduced to scales; inflorescence capitate; fruit a drupe, irregularly schizocarpic; exotesta with fine reticulate thickening; endosperm starchy; haustoria; embryo minute, undifferentiated; parasitic on Clematis, Euphorbia or various woody Asteraceae.
Region: south-western North America and north-western South America; Colombia to California, Arizona and Mexico.
TaxonomyLennoaceae was traditionally a Family. In the Cronquist system it was placed in Lamiales. In the Dahlgren system it was placed in Solanales.
In the Apg2 system it is placed in Lamiidae. Recently it is shown to be subfamily of the Boraginaceae.
It is sometimes treated as a subfamily Lennoideae of Boraginaceae.
