Lactarius quietus.
English: Oak milkcap; Oakbug milkcap; Southern milkcap.
German: Eichen-Milchling; Rotbraune Eichen-Milchling.
Region: Europe.
Habitat: exclusively under oak trees, solitarily or in scattered groups.
Use: edible or inedible.
MycologyIdentification: by its distinctive, strong oily smell, likened to bedbugs and wet laundry.
Lactarius quietus is a mycorrhizal fungus.
Cap: convex or flat; dull reddish brown; dry mat surface, with concentric bands; ± 6 cm in diameter; with a thick layer of firm, whitish-buff flesh.
Hymenium: decurrent; gills are brownish-white, later pale reddish brown with mauve hints, slightly decurrent; milk is white or cream, has a mild or slightly bitter taste.
Stipe: bare; ± 6 cm long, ± 15 mm thick.
Spore print: cream.
Spores: oval; with plentiful warts joined by numerous ridges, forming a well-developed network.
