Region: east Asia, southwest India, Western Ghats.
Habitat: canopy tree in evergreen and semi-evergreen forests; elevations from 200 to 1200 metres.
Culture: sacred tree.
Use: fruits in traditional medicine; nutritional, commercial, religious purposes; wood for incense sticks, perfumery, ply wood, motor truck bodies, furniture, carts, railway carriages, toys, textile wooden accessories like bobbins, cooperage, tight cooperages, frame work of carts and carriages.
BotanyEvergreen tree; 30 to 40 metres tall, sometimes even more.
Stem: straight; free of branches for more than three quarters of the tree's height; 100 cm in diameter; wood sweet-scented wood, highly valued for various woodworks.
