Region: southeast Asia - Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia.
Habitat: open country; evergreen forest; felled, disturbed, strongly cut-out forest; along roadsides, on (steep) hillsides; elevations up to 1,200 metres; poor, stony, laterite soils, poor soils, clay, limestone soils.
Use: timber; insecticide; fish poison; tender young leaves for food; red resin oozes from damage on the trunk; wood pale, brown, heavy for medium construction under cover, interior finishing and panelling, furniture, flooring, packing boxes and crates and ornamental items.
Content: isoflavones, rotenone.
BotanyEvergreen tree; 25 m tall; slow to establish, but then grows rapidly; devoid of a relationship with bacteria to fix atmospheric nitrogen; dense, dome-like crown.
Stem: cylindrical; fairly slender; free of branches for around 13 metres; steep buttresses, 150 - 300 cm high, 20cm thick and 40 - 60 cm out from the tree.
