Habitat: limestone, on chalky soils; hardy against sunny wall; needs well-drained soil.
Use: ornamental, quite elegant, foliage similar to legumes.

Stem: young shoots hollow; the lower half or third leafless.
Leaves: deciduous; alternate; doubly pinnate; 10 to 15 cm long, less wide; leaflets, 7 to 8, obovate or oval, rounded at the apex, entire, 6 to 25 mm long, dotted with translucent oil-glands, shortly stalked or stalkless; disagreeable odour when crushed.
Inflorescence: loose panicle; 30 cm long, 20 cm wide.
Flowers: small; pure white, yellow markings at the base; ± 1 cm long; blooming from August wide; petals 4, oblong rounded ends; calyx small, green, four-lobed; stamens 6 or 7 or 8, inserted at the base of a cup-shaped fleshy nectary, white, the margin divided into small blunt glandular yellowish processes and surrounds the base of a stalk on which the ovary is raised; lobes of ovary and stigma standing well out from the corolla; all parts have glandular cells.
