TaxonomyUntil the early 21st century, the order was not recognised by systems of classification, except in the Reveal system. The Cronquist system of 1981, placed them in families
Illiciaceae and
Schisandraceae, in the order Illiciales. The APG system of 1998, did not recognize
Austrobaileyales. The Apg2 system, of 2003, accepts
Austrobaileyales and places it among the basal angiosperms. The order belongs to the group of basal angiosperms, the ANA clade with
Amborellales, Nymphaeales, and
Austrobaileyales.
Austrobaileyales is sister to all remaining
Angiospermae, diverged early from them.
