TaxonomyUrticales was recognized in most classifications. Cronquist placed the order in the subclass Hamamelidae comprising:
Barbeyaceae,
Cannabaceae, Cecropiaceae,
Moraceae,
Ulmaceae,
UrticaceaeThe
Apg3 classification places these families in Rosalesorder
Rosales. Cecropiaceae is no longer recognized as separate from
Urticaceae.
The families
Ulmaceae,
Cannabaceae,
Moraceae, and
Urticaceae form a phylogenetic clade, called the Urticalean rosids: Celtidaceae,
Cannabaceae, Cecropiaceae,
Moraceae,
Ulmaceae,
Urticaceae. Urticalean rosids are derived out of a lineage including
Barbeyaceae,
Dirachmaceae, Elaegnaceae, and
Rhamnaceae, with
Rosaceae less closely related. They have as characteristics:
- dense gray tomentum comprising curly unicellular trichomes on abaxial leaf surfaces.
- reduced stamen count to one whorl or less.
- inconspicuous flowers with up to five stamens
- 2 carpels.
- unilocular ovary with single apical ovule.
- urticoid teeth upon leaves.
- developed prophyllar buds between paired inflorescences
Botany: wide range, deciduous or evergreen trees, vines, shrubs, annuals, some succulents; leaves variable, brochidodromous or palmately pinnate venation, often lobing or compounding in the leaf blade.
Moraceae, Urticacae and Cecropiaceae, produce latex.
