Region: Central America and northern South America; introduced to Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines.
Content: leaves are rich in protein.
Use: as animal fodder, for ducks, pigs, rabbits; as a living fence, a shade tree.
BotanyTree or shrub; fully arborescent; up to 9 to 20 m tall.
Roots: aerial roots.
Leaves: oval or oblong; up to 26 cm long, 14 cm wide, short petioles.
Flower: maroon with a yellow throat; bell-shaped, throat measures up to 2.5 cm long; blooms in the afternoon and the flowers fall away during the night.
Pollination: by bats, Glossophaga soricina.
