Region: Caribbean and Central America, S. America, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela; C. America, Panama to Guatemala.
Habitat: tropical and subtropical regions; coastal areas, sandy soils, and sometimes in disturbed sites; dense, primary rain forests; elevations up to 600 metres; damp thickets and forest, often on banks along streams.
Uses: traditional medicine.
BotanyHerb or shrub; perennial; climbing or scrambling; up to 3 metres tall, to 5 metres when climbing.
Root: fibrous root system, adapted to sandy and well-drained soils.
Leaves: narrow, linear to lanceolate leaves, which are relatively small and simple in structure.
Inflorescence: terminal or axillary clusters, spikes or racemes.
Flowers: small; tubular; white or pale blue; often fragrant.
Pollinators: bees, butterflies,other insects.
