Region: east Asia, Andaman Islands, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia.
Habitat: lowland forest; elevations up to 270 metres, sometimes 850 metres; occasionally growing on limestone; rarely almost in a pure stand.
Content: epoxylignans: pinoresinol, syringaresinol, epipinoresinol; n-heptacosyl trans-ferulate, methyl orsellinate, friedelin; decumbic anhydride; methyl gallate; methyl digallate.
Use: wood for light carpentry, furniture components, boxes, crates, matches, interior panelling, joinery, blockboard, plywood.
BotanyEvergreen tree; 30 to 45 metres tall.
Stem: 50 to 90 cm in diameter; occasionally with steep plank buttresses up to 2 metres high; heartwood is a light brown, with or without pink to reddish-brown glints, not clearly demarcated from the sapwood, texture is coarse, the grain straight, sometimes wavy, surface lustrous, moderately heavy, moderately hard, elastic, not very durable, susceptible to fungi, dry wood borers and termites; wood seasons normally, moderately stable when dry, generally works well with ordinary tools, nailing and screwing are good, gluing is correct.
