Mycology: found in deciduous woodlands, on chalky soils; solid bolete; cap olive-brown up to 20 cm in diameter, with small red pores on the underside; stem stout, ochre,patterned with a red mesh-work; stains blue when bruised or cut; mycorrhizal, symbiotic with oak, birch, beech; growth-enhancing effect on conifers; fruit bodies are highly attractive to, and often infested by, insects, flies.
Use: edible when cooked.
