Region: East Asia, China, Japan, Korea, Siberia.
Habitat: wet shaded rocks by streams in the mountains; forests and rock crevices; down to sea-level in the north of its range, elevations of 2200 to 2900 metres in China; prefers a cool position, moist humus-rich, acid soil; light woodland; prefers a shady position; frost tolerant; suitable for moist, sandy, loamy clay soils, acid, neutral and basic; grows in semi-shade.
Use: ornamental; young leaves, cooked added to soups, rice.

Leaves: large, round, fleshy; sometimes flushed red or pink.
Inflorescence: panicles on slender branched stalks.
Flowers: hermaphrodite; small; white, sometimes flushed red or pink; starry; flowers in summer; 2 lower petals significantly longer than the others; flowering September to October.
