Name: cuneifolia means “wedge-shaped leaves”.
Region: mountains of central and southern Europe, from northwestern Spain over the Pyrenees, Cevennes, Alps, Apennines, up to the eastern and southern Carpathians and the north of Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Habitat: in woods, mainly beech or chestnut; on shaded rocks and boulders; humid areas; humus rich soil; altitude of 400–1600 metres above sea level.
BotanyPerennial herb; 10 to 25 centimetres high.
Stem: woody and creeping.
Leaves: alternate, arranged in a basal rosette; fleshy, slightly leathery; wedge-shaped, obovate or roundish and notched on the margins.
Inflorescence: loose, irregularly branched; with 5-15 flowers.
Flowers: five white petals; 2.5 to 4 mm long; blooming from May through July.
Pollination: by insects.
Fruit: capsule.
