Habitat: marine, some inhabiting estuaries; tropical and subtropical regions of all oceans; down to 100 to 500 m; near coral reefs.
Use: important food fish; aquaria, but mostly grow too fast to be popular aquarium fish.

Food: carnivores, crustaceans, other fish; few are plankton-feeders.
Ecology: harbour about 9 species of parasites per fish species.
