Content: high levels of lignin and cellulose; 3–pentadecyl (10–enyl) catechol (litreol), an urushiol similar in structure to the allergens from poison oak and poison ivy.
Habitat: matorral climates, southern Mediterranean; drought resistant.
Ecology: home for 29 families, 57 genera and 69 species of beetles.
BotanyShrub, full tree when undisturbed; evergreen.
Root: deep, extensive root system; large, underground burls, giving new growth after it is cut or burned down.
Leaves: oval; border smooth or undulating; dense.
Dispersion: by birds, Turdus falklandii, Mimus thenca, Phytotoma rara, foxes, Pseudalopex.
