Habitat: moist tropics; lowland forests; mixed forests, sparse mountain forests, valley scrub; elevations sea level to 400, to 1400 metres; prefers sunny position; well-drained soils of moderate fertility, pH of 6 to 7.
Ecology: galls caused by Phacopteron lentiginosum.
Use: edible fruit, raw, boiled or pickled; support for Piper nigrum.
BotanyDeciduous shrub, tree; to 18 metres tall.
Stem: bark pealing off in flakes.
Flowers: bisexual.
Fruits: drupes; round; fleshy, size of a gooseberry; green at first, yellow to blackish when ripe.
