English: Spiral Extinguisher-moss.
Name: from the Greek en, meaning in, and kalyptos, which means to cover, veil or lid.
Genus: 34 species.
Region: America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, Madagascar, New Zealand.
Habitat: lowlands; on base-rich rock and stone, especially limestone,mortar in walls; in grassland on chalk and limestone.
Botany
This moss forms relatively large, dull, pale green patches.
Stems: shoots are typically 1 to 2 cm tall.
Leaves: 4 to 7 mm long; broad, more or less parallel-sided, opaque, very matt; narrow abruptly to a blunt, rounded tip, with the nerve ending in
or just below the tip; clusters of brown, thread-like propagules often occur in the leaf axils.
Capsules: rarely present; spirally ribbed; have a peristome; until maturity entirely covered by the typical, very large calyptra.
