Names: Korys is the Greek word for helmet or cap.
Botany: blossoms January, February, not hurt by frost.
Content: alkaloids: protopine, allocryptopine, corydaline, aurotensin, bicucine, bicuculline, capauridine, corypalline, corpaverine.
Use: basket-work, divining rods.
Culture: fairy tales of a snake god, the hazelworm, living in the roots of the tree, can give wisdom of Solomon and mighty power; hazel protects against fire and snakes; hazel branches are used for basket-work and as divining rods.
