Region: South America, southern and eastern Brazil.
Habitat: secondary formations of the Atlantic rainforest; elevations from 20 to 1700 metres; prefers a sunny position.
Use: wood for packing cases, simple cut or carved objects, toys; ornamental, in landscaping; fruits edible.
BotanyEvergreen tree; ± globose crown; 7 to 10 metres tall; grow rapidly.
Stem: cylindrical; 30 to 50 cm in diameter; wood light, low resistance to insect attack, low quality.
Fruit: thin to fairly thick layer of pulpy, sweetish-tasting flesh surrounding a single seed; red, globose; 10 mm in diameter; sweet flavour.
