They fear that if they do what they really want friends or brothers will run away from them. They don't know what it is to be themselves and still keep in contact. They fear that when they reveal themselves, their autonomy will be crushed.

But they aren't sure of that either. So they are in an in-between state, fearing to exert their own will and thus not doing so. It brings them into a state of doing nothing.
