Habitat: wet tropical rainforests; lowlands and up to the lower parts of the uplands, tablelands, mountains; from about 50 to 1000 m altitude, 650 to 1300 m; largest size on basalt derived fertile soils.
Stem: trunks pale grey colour; rounded buttresses, likened to an elephant's foot.
Leaves: compound; up to 35 cm long; alternate.
Inflorescences: panicle–structured compound.
Flowers: white–cream; blooming from November to May.
Fruits: woody follicle; with 1 or 2 winged seeds inside, which sulphur-crested cockatoos eat.
