English: Blastoclads; Chytrids.
TaxonomyOriginally the order Blastocladiales erected by Petersen and classified in the
Chytridiomycota. Molecular and zoospore ultrastructural characters showed it was not monophyletic with
Chytridiomycota. Members of
Blastocladiomycetes though, are often referred to colloquially as Chytrids. However Chytrid should refer only to members of
Chytridiomycota.
Members of Blastocladiomycota,
Chytridiomycota, and Neocallimastigomycota are lumped together as the zoosporic true fungi.
Blastocladiomycota contains 2 Orders, 5 families and approximately 12 genera.
