Region: east Asia, southern China, Indo-China, Philippines, Java, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar; invasive in Hawaii.
Habitat: dry low country, in forests, rather common, forming often dense masses of matted woody stems overhead; succeeds in a sunny position or in semi-shade.
Use: essential oil of flowers as a flavouring in tea, stimulating tea-like beverage, perfumery; ornamental; flowers, very long lasting, hold their scent for days, if kept in water, permeating an entire room, intoxicating aroma of the flowers; for screen; bark for good long fibre.
BotanyEvergreen climbing or scandent shrub; up to 8 metres tall; powerful, far-reaching, many-stemmed woody climber.
Stem: old stems of great thickness; supports itself on other plants by means of modified leaf stems that are shaped like hooks.
