Botany: fan palm, short, 3 m high; habitat dry, hilly; stems dense, multi-stemmed clumps, clustered, persistent spiny leaf sheaths; leaves greyish-white on the lower surface, leaf sheaths remain attached to the stem after the leaf drops off; inflorescence, shorter than the leaves; flowers bisexual with 9–12 stamens and a single carpel; fruit white, sometimes orange, oblong or pear-shaped, single seed.
