Leaves: untoothed; rosette of low growing foliage; paired; lower leaves spoon-shaped, stalked; middle and upper leaves are linear-lanceolate with pointed apexes.
Inflorescence: numerous flower stems, 20 to 90 cm tall.
Flowers: pink; 3–4 cm across; five narrow petals, deeply divided into four lobes giving an untidy, ragged appearance; calyx tube is five-toothed; ten stamens; blooming from May to August.
Stems: with barbed hairs, pointing downward, rough to the touch.
Pollination: by butterflies, long-tongued bees, many types of insects.
Fruits: capsules, small to 1 cm; opening on top by five teeth; with many small seeds.
