Region south-western N. America, Wyoming, New Mexico, California, Idaho, Arizona.
Habitat: wet meadows, streamsides; moist, deep, fertile, well-drained, moisture-retentive, usually strongly alkaline soils;
altitude from 1500 to 2850 metres; prefers a sunny position with some shade at the hottest part of the day; hardy to at least -15°c; thrive with relatively cool summers and mild winters
Ecology: sensitive to rust, Puccinia malvacearum
Use: medicinal; leaves, cooked as greens
BotanyHerb; perennial; up to 80 cm tall.
Flowers: flowering a second time in late summer when cut back after first flowering.
