English: Fuchsia-flowered gooseberry.
Clades: Grossulariaceae.
Region: central and southern California, Baja California.
Habitat: scrub and chaparral of the coastal mountain ranges; drought-tolerant; prefers dappled to bright light; dry gardens, under oaks.
Use: ornamental.
BotanyShrub; spiny; spreading; deciduous; to 3 meters tall.
Stem: coated in bristles; with three long spines at each stem nodes.
Leaves: leathery; shallowly divided into several lobes; mostly hairless; upper surfaces dark green and shiny.
Inflorescence: solitary flower or raceme of up to four flowers.
Flowers: elongate; red; resemble fuchsias; tube from sepals, gland-studded, scarlet; petals 4, red petals; stamens red; stigmas protrude far from the mouth of the flower, up to 4 cm long; flowering in spring.
Fruit: berry; red-orange; 1 cm long; covered densely in glandular bristles.
