English: Whitestem gooseberry; White stemmed gooseberry.
Region: western North America, California, Rocky Mountains.
Habitat: mountain forests, woodlands, and meadows.
BotanyErect or spreading thicket like shrub; 3 metres high.
Stem: hairless or bristly; with black resin glands; spines at its nodes.
Leaves: small; divided deeply into three to five toothed lobes, divided partway into smaller lobes.
Inflorescence: solitary flower or raceme of up to five flowers which hangs pendent.
Flower: five reddish green sepals which are reflexed upward; white or pinkish petals; protruding stamens and stigmas.
Fruit: edible hairless greenish, purple, or black berry; ± 1 cm wide.
