Indonesion: Nibung (meaning thorn).
Philippines, Hiligaynon: Anibung.
Region: Indochina, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines.
Use: ornamental, becoming invasive; construction of kelongs, wooden structures for catching or cultivation of fish.
Culture: a cluster of Nibong palms survive near the entrance of the Istana, the end of Orchard Road, Singapore, a plaque states: "As the nibong is a mangrove palm, this site must have once been a mangrove swamp."
Botany: palm, ± 10 high; dense thickets of up to 50 palm trees; habitat inland, lower salinity waters, mangrove swamps, seawater-resistance, below 150 metres; trunks covered with long black spines; leaves finely pinnate, drooping leaflets.
