Leaves: knob-like, cylindrical; fleshy; up to 2 cm long; green to bright red; visibly bumpy with shiny, bubble-like papillae.
Flowers: solitary or borne in loose clusters; 5 mm wide; petals many, narrow to thready, white or pale yellow.
Fruit: a capsule, opens when it becomes wet, releasing seeds.
