Region: south America, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, the Guyanas.
Habitat: humid upland rainforests; primary and secondary formations; sunny positions and in shade.
Botany
Evergreen, slow-growing, dioecious tree tree; elongated crown; 4 - 18 metres tall.
Stem: straight, cylindrical; 20 - 30cm in diameter; wood is coarse-textured, irregular-grained, heavy, slightly susceptible to wood eating organisms, easy to cut.
Use: edible, delicious fruit; wood for small items, tool handles, fuel.
Fruit: thick-skinned; succulent, sweet pulp with a delicious flavour; subglobose; 7 cm in diameter.
