English: Twinleaf; Rheumatism root.
Genus: a few species
Habitat: limestone soils of rich deciduous forests.
Region: Eastern North America especially Great Lakes region, Ohio Valley, and Appalachians.
Botany: perennial herbs, ± 30 cm tall; uncommon spring wildflowers; leaves smooth, lrge and nearly divided in half; flowers smooth, emerge from the rhizome, showy white, with eight petals, resembles bloodroot, short-lived; blooming April or May; fruit is a green pear-shaped capsule with a hinged top; seeds are dispersed by ants, myrmecochory.
