Botany: unarmed, monoecious palms,moderate size; trunk erect, bare,with prominent leaf scars, base sometimes knob-like shape; leaves pinnate, well-developed sheaths eventually disintegrate into a criss-crossed mass of fine fibres around the trunk; inflorescences erect, later pendulous, between the leaf stems, with ± 4 spikes arising from a single broad base.
Use: ornamental, best house plant in the world, tolerant of poor treatment, neglect, low light; excellent landscaping plant, does well in shade as well as full sun in most warm temperate/subtropical climates.
