Synonym: Garcinia pedunculata.
English: Cowa mangosteen.
Bengal: Thaikal; Tikui; Tikur.
Assam: Bor thekra; Kiyi; Kuji; Thakra tenga.
Manipur: Haibung.
Genus: 400 species.
Region: east Asia, southwest China, India, Bengal and Assam, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Malaysia, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia.
Habitat: humid mixed forests, on hills, in valleys; elevations from 400 - 900 metres.
Content: 9% oil.
Use: edible fruits; leaves, cooked as a vegetable; grafting stock for mangosteen; medicinal, Ayurveda, in Assam from time immemorial.
BotanyEvergreen, tall tree; 8 - 12 metres tall; yellow gum, insoluble in water, soluble in spirits.
Stem: 15 - 20 cm in diameter.
Flowers: in January.
Fruit: ovoid-globose, yellow-brown; 5 - 6cm long and 4 - 5 cm in diameter; from January to June.
