BotanySingle-stemmed, slender, evergreen feather palm, up to 20 metres tall, up to 16 cm in diameter with a swollen base; crown of 10 - 20 leaves, up to 3 metres long.
Use: apical bud is a highly prized food; ornamental.
Cultural: rare due to over-exploitation
Region: Africa - Mauritius, Réunion.
Habitat: coastal forests; low elevations, up to 600 metres; can tolerate occasional light frosts; light shade or full sun; well-drained soil; tolerant of salt and strongest of winds, salt-laden hurricanes
