Region: tropical and subtropical America.
BotanyShrubs, vines, small trees, up to 20 m tall, with evergreen foliage; epiphytes, then developing long roots that descend to the ground and eventually strangle and kill the host tree.
Leaves: sessile, opposite, leathery, entire margin; bright green.
Flowers: white to greenish-white, yellow or pink; 5 stigmata.
Fruit: leathery greenish-brown valvate capsule which splits open to release several red, fleshy-coated seeds; more long than wide.
