Stating autonomy is selfishThey fear that autonomy is a selfish thing. So they hesitate to state their independence. They are afraid to take up their freedom out of fear that it’s egotistical to do so, that they will start using or even abusing others. But they have to declare their independence at the same time. The two forces keep them blocked and nothing happens.
This can be due to a childhood where they were abused. Or they can have been neglected as a child, which gave them the feeling of being not worth much.
Stating their autonomy will block egotismThe opposite can also be true, that they fear that by declaring their autonomy will end up with their needs not being fulfilled anymore. They need a lot, but how can they ask others for it or even take it, when they should be independent and autonomous?
Not stating autonomy is selfishIt can also be the case that they feel not being autonomous is selfish. By not being independent others have to take care of them in one way or another. So they must be autonomous, but they don't know whether they can do it. And that brings them into a state of nervous anticipation, not knowing what to do.
Personal needs block stating their autonomyThey can become very stressed from not declaring their autonomy. Their path to autonomy turns destructive in order to get the attention of others. It can go as far as auto-mutilation so that others will see their needs.
