Name: Cantharellus aurantiacus
Region: Europe.

MycologyMutualistic, symbiotic; turns brown when pressed; high water content, sponge-like; grows on fir, spruce, oak, beech, hornbeam; Averse nitrogen rich soil; resistant to worms and insects.
Culture: emblem of maidenhood.
Use: pleasant spicy, edible mushroom.
TaxonomyAt one time, all yellow or golden chanterelles in western North America had been classified as Canterellus cibarius. Using DNA analysis, they have since been shown to be a group of related species. In 1997, the Pacific golden chanterelle Canterellus formosus) and Canterellus cibarius variation roseocanus were identified, followed by Canterellus cascadensis in 2003 and Canterellus californicus in 2008.
