Botany: perennial herbs, forming bulbs with a membranous sheath; leaves simple, parallel-veined, basal; inflorescences grape-like, terminally on smooth cylindrical stems; flowers numerous, in the axils of small, membranous bracts, hermaphroditic, triple; bracts six, identically shaped, tubular, bell-shaped or funnel-shaped, white to cream to brown, rarely from blue to purple; fruit capsule, triangular, with winged edges; seeds are more or less spherical, rarely elongated and glossy.
