Region: subtropical and tropical America, Pacific Islands, Australia, Asia, Bangladesh, Africa, naturalised worldwide.
Habitat humid to dry and semi-arid, including flooded forests and grasslands; up to 500 m altitude; along marshy ridges in swamps, requiring moist ground, in rice fields, near coasts, deciduous forests, grasslands, marine intertidal areas.
Use: food, as a supplementary vegetable; leaves as a vegetable, raw or cooked, in soups; seeds are used in a traditional medicine.

Stem: herbaceous; smooth to sparsely hairy.
Leaves: hairless; narrowly lanceolate; obtuse to acute base; obtuse, mucronate apex; entire margin; 4 to 8 cm long.
Flowers: acuminate; solitary on the leaf axil; peduncles 5 cm long; sepals 5, broadly ovate, the outer 2 are broader than inner 3; ± 15 mm long; corolla white, campanulate, ± 3 cm long; flowers from September to November.
Fruit: ovoid; capsules; 2 cm long; subtended by the enlarged calyx.
Seeds: black; smooth.
