English: Common bent; Colonial bent; Browntop.
Name: Agrostis comes from the Greek agros meaning forage plant, a field.
Region: Eurasia; widely introduced in the world.
Habitat: moist grasslands, open meadows; also agricultural areas, roadsides; invading disturbed areas; neutral to acidic soils; purple moor grass and rush pastures; poorly drained soils of the lowlands and upland fringe.
Use: for golf courses, home lawns; ornamental, spectacular appearance
intolerant of heavy use.
BotanyHerb, grass; rhizomatous; stoloniferous; perennial; very fine texture; grows very dense; tallest of the bent species; 10 to 70 cm tall.
Propagation: easy to grow from seeds and fertilization; takes longer to establish than creeping bent; does not require the intense maintenance.
Leaves: fine; dense sward; ligule is short, does not come to a point.
Inflorescence: panicles; finely branched; like a purple haze; persists in winter.
Flowers: flowering from May until June.
