Case by Resie MoonenRichard, 10 years PANDAS Syndrome after Borrelia and Streptococcal infection
Pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococci (PANDAS)
Richard had a previous tick infection in his left earlobe, with erythema migrans and night sweats, no treatment at first. He was not given Doxycyline until 6 months later, and only then did the erythema migrans disappear.
The pediatrician tested his blood and found Borrelia Afzelii IgG positiv, and the Antistreptolysintiter very high! (>1200). During this medication of Azithromycin, he became very aggressive and psychotic and had to be opened up in child psychiatry.
He received antipsychotics, Risperda and Abilify.
After admission, he was seen by a homeopath, who gave Syphylinum M, which worsened his situation, with even more compulsion, and fear of eating!
Two years later, he suddenly woke up with tremendous sensitivity to sound and light! He was in panic, extremely anxious. He also developed compulsive obsessive behavior, especially with food! His character changed, he became very tired and could no longer go to school
He looks at me suspiciously; he does not trust me.
His behavior is wary, defensive, as if I'm going to insult or attack him; he is cautious, clearly wary. He reacts dismissively to my questions; he wants to be left alone
He is very restless, moves his hands all the time.
He has tics in the face.
He washes his hands often, with very dry cracked skin.
He is very sensitive in his hands, tactile hypersensitive; he also cannot tolerate a belt around his waist.
As medication, he still has Abilify, Broxil, Nexium (via child psychiatry Mondriaan), and Iv IgG (Privigen, via Erasmus MC)
He can hardly eat anything and he feels very guilty when he has eaten something.
He eats very little, only old cheese and chocolate spread.
He lost a lot of weight: At 10 years his weight is 23 kg, with a height of 138 cm.
He always has to defend myself! Nobody understands him. he can't go to school anymore: the children, the noise, he can't stand it; it makes him angry all the time, he wants to hit someone!
His mother says: it's so hard with him: he thinks black or white, nothing in between. He's very perfectionist. He goes over his limits all the time, and then he comes home very aggressive, he can even hit me when he comes home, like an impulse!
He is very focused on himself, has little contact with his brother, very autonomous, does things only in his own way.
He is very compulsive with food, either he refuses, or he eats very little, and we cannot help him with this.
All medication, including antipsychotics, have not been able to help him. He is still distrustful, aggressive and compulsive!
He is very smart and intelligent. His IQ >145!!!
He is creative and taught himself to play the piano. He teaches himself everything by himself, wants to on his own. Bromatum: inflammation left side of face; guilt; psychosis; compulsive behavior; impulsive aggression; restless hands; frequent hand washing; desire chocolate.Follow up In 5 months he changed into a happy child.
Mother tells me, "I see my own child again, his eyes are again sparkling!
Color in his face, energy is coming back!"
For the first time in 2 years he can sit on the couch; he is less restless, no more restless hands.
He is much more open, he has less compulsive behavior.
In 6 months he gained 7.5 kg, later another 3 kg!
He eats more different things; he likes cheese, butter and bananas.
After 6 months of treatment he could go back to school, and he could skip 2 years because of his high intelligence, straight to grade 8.
Right now, 2022, he is in the Extra Brain-Talent Group, Gymnasium, highest level.
He has a fascination with Magnets and electric cars, he knows all about them!
He is working on movies with digital music. He is very clever with digital issues!
He plays outside a lot, has friends and no longer has aggressive and compulsive behavior.
He eats normally now, desires bread, old cheese, chocolate spread. Weight is 46 kg (doubled!).
Richard thinks well about everything, and he refused the Covid vaccination.
He talks to me freely during consultations, he laughs, jokes, trusts me completely, always leaves me feeling how special child he is.
