Amaranthus retroflexus
Year 2024, Issue 2, Article 2CaseAuthor: Anton Kramer
Case of man, 50, cystitis.
He has recurring serious cystitis since a suprapubic bladder catheter. Prostate cancer is blocking the urethra and preventing normal urination for six months.
It all started four years ago with the diagnosis of prostate cancer. Two types of cancer were found, small cell cancer and adenocarcinoma.Small cell cancer is a highly malignant cancer that most commonly arises within the lung but can start in the prostate to. It is an undifferentiated neoplasm composed of primitive-appearing cells. It can occur in combination with a wide variety of other histological variants of lung or prostate cancer.
In the prostate, small-cell carcinoma (SCCP) is a rare form of cancer (approximately 1% of prostate cancers). Due to the fact that there is little rise in PSA (prostate specific antigen) levels, this form of cancer is normally diagnosed at an advanced stage after metastasis.
First line treatment is usually with cisplatin and etoposide.
All this was true for our patient: mix of cancers, little rise in PSA, metastasis, treatment with cisplatin and etoposide. Here radiotherapy followed because of the adenocarcinoma.
Unexpectedly he survived much longer than foreseen: for four years already; prognosis was six months. He hopes that his change in lifestyle has contributed to it.
Medication for the bladder/cystitis: solifenacine (Vesicare), methenamine amygdalaa (Reflux), clobazam, ciprofloxacine (in case of cystitis). For cancer gosereline (Zoladex). Medication for hypertension. In the past cisplatin and etoposide; it gave suppression of bone marrow which still impairs his immune system.CystitisHe comes for homeopathic therapy because he wants a better immune system.
Once or twice a month he has cystitis and is seriously ill; intense malaise, nausea, weakness, turbid urine, headache, hoarseness, sensitive liver and stomach. He has only very slight fever. Antibiotics help for the moment but weaken his immunity. He is fed up with the illness and all the therapies.
He felt sick with the chemotherapy and ever since. He has not fully recovered from chemotherapy; his immune system is still weak. Then the operation for the suprapubic catheter took much energy. And the following bladder infections take there toll.CancerThere where only a few symptoms, as can be seen with small cell carcinomas. He had been rather impotent for years already and had little sperm. He thought it was due to problems in the relation. But once he had a strange feeling in his lower abdomen and decided to see his doctor. A biopsy was done and the diagnosis was made. Prognosis was bad, six to 9 months. But he reacted very well; small cell cancer and metastases disappeared and the adenocarcinoma was much smaller. After two years PSA rose a little and a metastasis in a lumbar vertebra was found. Radiotherapy was repeated and helped him well.
For nine months the prostate was growing and urination became difficult. Six months ago a urethral catheter was tried but that was blocked by the prostate. Therefore a suprapubic catheter was placed; from then the cystitis started recurring.
Cancer has confronted him with the end of life. It helped him change his attitude to life, became milder. And working on his health; eating healthier, taking more time to go in nature.PersonalityHe presents with two opposing aspects: rather hesitant at one side, stylish and critical on the other.
He showed some reluctance to tell in depth about his life and personality. Then I asked him about things that might have impeded his male territory, an item that may play a role in male genital diseases. He has lived separately from his wife now and then in the years before he got cancer. They had little sexual intercourse for many years because of conflicts.
He himself could be rather arrogant and behaved as the wise guy towards his wife, her family and his own family. He had his opinions, was very normative. So were his parents; outer aspects were important. They were censorious towards him, his choices in life and even more towards the choice for his wife. She was from a lower class and they did not approve. Furthermore, his wife was very close to her parents; they were in the house very much, taking care of the children; "Raising children is the task and privilege of mother and grandmother". His ideas were not appreciated. Therefore he felt rather excluded from his children and even from his home. The image he had of his role as father was renounced and he felt that as a deep pain.He is an art professor. In the beginning there was little work; he did not have much to live from. In his younger years he was quite rebellious, much criticism concerning society.
He is rather artistic, but approaches art more from an mental, scientific angle. And here he has many conflicts, he claims to know what is the best way to approach his art, by science. He is not an easy teacher, colleague or partner. He knows that this attitude makes many people back off.AnalysisHe is a sensitive person with a rich palette of feelings and insights. So I choose for plants.
He has great difficulty with social talk and social conventions. This points to a Lanthanide.
There are many silver aspects; rather closed about himself; art, science, stylish appearance.
Although silver is important, the Silica aspect is the centre of the story and of the problems: marriage, parents, parents in law.
So I looked for plants wit Lanthanide and Silica swries. This points to Caryophyllidae; this has Silver series aspects as well.
He is outgoing, taking a stand, demonstrating a nitrogen-appearance. So Phase 5 seems fit.
He feels insecure about his place in his family and in his marriage; this would point to Subphase 6. This is what I preferred but there is no remedy there, even no information at all. So I choose Subphase 5 since he felt that his parents pushed him to perform and his mother boasted about him, even about achievements he did not (yet) accomplish. And his upbringing is part of the problem with his spouse.
So we are at 3-663.55, Amaranthaceae. Stage thirteen would match best, placing himself somewhat outside his social context. But 3-663.55.13, Celiosa has qualities that are not his; and it was not available. Stage.09 would have been very nice (the wise-guy).
So what to do? The family of Amaranthaceae, as Jan Scholten describes them has aspects that I took as sidelines in his story: anger about social injustice, awareness of having less opportunities because of class-inequality. But feeling well about 3-663.55 ancd 3-663.56 I choose an Amaranthus retroflexus. And what matches is that his marriage was strongly influenced by their class differences after all. In hindsight it is interesting to realize that not the marriage itself was the most important, but the differences in social position of the two families.
Amaranthus retroflexus is less appropriate according to Jan's book, but taking the overall description of Amaranthaceae I felt OK with the choice.
And the remedy worked wonders. He had a clear aggravation: he was very tired, as never before for three days. His therapist was not surprised as he had been under great pressure because of the diagnosis 'cancer', the treatments that took so much energy, the family situation. After the aggravation he had no strong cystitis anymore; two light infections in the first three weeks where he was not ill and they reacted quick on nitrofuarantoin. So this was clearly better than before. His energy rose, sport and walking was easier; he did not know that walking this far would still be possible. The urine was darker and smelled stronger than before.
The third consultation, two months after the first, gives an ongoing improvement. No cystitis at all (!), improving energy, much better moods, better general immunity (no colds, bowel disturbances etc). Urine still is rather dark and smelly; since the general picture is good it can be seen as an clearing of bladder/body.ConclusionThe cystitis reacted very well on Amaranthus retroflexus. And his immunity in general improved as well. The cancers of the prostate are not to be evaluated yet; there is no increase but future will show if Amaranthus retroflexus improved here too.
